Lakshmi Mosaic 2011

In a private residence in metropolitan Adelaide is a beautifully renovated residence with a gorgeous garden. A place of sanctuary and contemplation. I was commissioned by the owner to create a mosaic based on the Indian Goddess, Lakshmi. There are many, many illustrations of Lakshmi already in existence, incorporating a number of common elements such as gold coins falling from her hands, lotus flowers, and elephants. This design is my interpretation of traditional imagery, specifically for mosaic.

This mosaic includes terracotta relief carving for the face, hands, arms, and feet. Also included is the use of gold enamel on particular elements within the design. My background as a ceramic designer helped out here!

The design of this work began in February 2011, and the finished work was installed in March 2012.
