I have worked as a community artist since 1998. Mosaic is a medium particularly well suited to community projects as the tile cutting skills are not difficult to learn. I encourage the use of hand-cutting techniques as the use of power tools is noisy and potentially dangerous. One of the wonderful things about community mosaic projects is that participants can chat around the table while they're cutting tiles - learning more about their neighbours and making new friends.
The end result of a community mosaic project is a public artwork. The design of the work expresses something the participants value about their part of the world.
My work as a community artist has involved working with a diverse range of community participants in the creation of mosaic artworks that are located in towns around South Australia.
