This work was commissioned by Cittaslow Goolwa in 2019. Friendship Benches exist all around the world and symbolize good will between all people. Barbary O’Brien and I collaborated on the design of both the stone bench and the mosaic that covers it. We ran workshops with local volunteers to cut the tiles.
Barbary and I had the design finished in January 2019 but it wasn’t until August of that year that we completed making the stone bench. During this time, we started the tile cutting workshops and so by the time we’d finished stone laying, the tile cutting was also finished. We installed the mosaic in September 2019.
