This mosaic was commissioned by the City of Victor Harbor and commemorates the many musicals put on in the Victor Harbor Town Hall by the South Coast Choral and Arts Society. The name ‘Whale and Blubber’ is a play on words – ‘wail and blubber’ is a reference to how the audience reacts to tragic melodramas, with the word ‘wail’ replaced with ‘whale’ because Victor Harbor prides itself on being a place whales visit.
I worked with a dedicated team of local volunteers, including Councillor Liz Cooper who initiated the project, to cut the tiles. I designed the work in April 2007 and installed it in December 2007.
The artwork is 2400mm x 2400mm, and made from hand-cut, glazed ceramic tiles.
